About our most boring days

4 min readAug 31, 2021

In the end, do we carry the memories of the most boring days that we live, however superlatively boring the days be? I don’t think so! Rather, I think, the more superlative the boring days be, the lesser the chance for those days to be remembered? Chances are, the memories of the averagely boring days will remain , because of the one or half exciting thing that might happen on those days or at least have the possibility to happen. But mostly memories of days that even lack the charm of being called as ‘mundane’ go into some sort of recycle bin in our mind. And it happens for good- so that we can more easily get to recall our good, fond and best memories. And for bad too- so that we can be made to remind of our bad memories, of times we had been stupid, of times we made a fool of ourselves, of times that will always remain an incompetent teacher to teach us what we ought not to repeat, times that will always leave us vulnerable enough to indulge in the memories of it.

On these terribly boring days, good chances are that you won’t take a single photo with your phone’s camera or even find an old photo to post on social media, unless you’re a nerd-photography-enthusiast who can even go to the extent of photographing the ceiling fan, some design on the bedsheet, or how the world looks like from within a bottle of water. So for someone who isn’t a photography enthusiast like that, even google photos or instagram-facebook can’t help make memories for you on these days.

You can think of calling up friends and making plans to go out, but stay assured these are the days when they are sure to be unavailable for any plan. These are not even the days when they will agree to make a plan and then cancel at the last minute. In fact, these are the only days your friends will be sure enough themselves that they can’t be up for a plan. It can even happen this way that they will miss your call and will call you back after 12 in the night. And eventually, if anything good turns out of that call (possibly won’t), that surely not to get counted as the memory of the previous date.

A thing you can try doing on these kinda days is to stay away for a while from social media. For otherwise, you’ll find yourself indulging in an endless scrolling of your social media feed that you’ll take to the extent of a meaninglessness that will eventually make you more tired and your day more tedious.

Don’t open Netflix at all. It’s very certain that on these days you won’t be able to decide for yourself which movie to watch. You will see before yourself a dozen of options, but you won’t be able to select one. And if you manage to push yourself to select one, you’ll eventually lose motivation and close it by say within 19 mins; which is before the inciting incident , so there’ll be absolutely nothing wrong with the film or filmmaker to be blamed for. But if you find yourself desperate enough to tap at least once on the Netflix app on your phone’s screen or the ’N’ icon on your taskbar, instead of being with the idea of watching a movie you haven’t watched, try choosing to watch an episode of FRIENDS which you have watched a dozen of times. It’s surely not going to make a new memory for you but will at least make your day ‘mundane’, and which is still better than a day which is wholly boring.

It’s most likely that on these days you will find nothing interesting to play from your own playlists and liked songs. Every song will appear to you as ‘same old stuff’. You won’t find your favorite comedians funny. And even Dan Brown will fail to thrill you. And perhaps a parcel that you might be expecting to receive on these days, will fail to reach you.

What you can try doing on these days is to try doing things that you generally never do. Maybe try learning the UP accent by watching snippets of Raj Kumar Rao’s scenes from Bareilly Ki Barfi. Or if that doesn’t sound good to you, maybe try making Maggie but not in the usual 2min way but in the most bizarrest way you can think of or read about on the internet.

And if not anything, stop trying to make your boring day happening or memorable, and instead find things that you have been delaying to do forever, say- just cleaning the mess out of your room, especially if it’s something that generally you’re not seen to do!
